Samburu's Creation
Samburu Snapshots
It is easy to miss the small things in nature, and sometimes we are too busy to notice the beautiful things around us. Using a camera can help us to focus on what is around us and help us to share all those amazing sights. Our naturalist will give you a special ‘camera’ and you can take snapshots of all the amazing things around you, sharing your discoveries with the rest of your friends.
Map Sticks
Have you ever wondered how the Samburu warriors find their way around the bush without a map and compass? Take a long stick and tie on pieces of string. As you take a short walk, find landmarks that will remind you of the path you took. Tie small objects onto your stick that remind you of these features. When you get back to base, tell a friend the story of your journey, describing your route using the objects on your stick to help you remember the way. See if they can follow your path by using your map stick.
Bird Spotting
Help the kids learn more about adaptation, why birds have different beaks (Nectarines, flesh eaters, Seed eaters), why certain animals can survive only in certain areas Special 5 (Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx and Somali Ostrich).

Those staying for more than 3 -4 days can join the village and learn the role of men & women, and young boys can go herd the animals as well as they can also join the warriors to dance.

They will finish with a crazy animal that has the body parts of 7 different animals. The first letters of each animal will be used to give the crazy animal a crazy name!
These animals collectively contribute to the diverse and fascinating wildlife of the Samburu National Reserve.

Reticulated Giraffe
The reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) is known for its striking coat pattern of large, polygonal patches that resemble a net or a web. Grevy’s zebra (Equus grevyi) is the largest and most endangered zebra species. It’s known for its narrower stripes compared to other zebras and for having a white underbelly. Grevy’s zebras are adapted to arid habitats and are distinguishable by their larger ears and more donkey-like appearance
Gerenuk
The gerenuk (Litocranius walleri) is a unique antelope species known for its long neck and legs, allowing it to reach high leaves and branches in the acacia trees that other antelopes can’t access. The name “gerenuk” means “giraffe-necked” in the Somali language.
